What Are FODMAPs?

FODMAPS are Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, And Polyols. These are more commonly known as fructans, lactose, fructose, and sugar alcohols, respectively. For some people, these carbohydrates are harder to digest, thus causing stomach discomfort, cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, etc.

Many people with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth), and other intestinal conditions have found this diet to be extremely helpful in relieving symptoms to create a lifestyle in which their condition has minimal impact.

This diet is not meant to be a permanent lifestyle change; rather, it is an elimination diet of foods high in FODMAPs that lasts for 1-6 weeks. Once symptoms have subsided, FODMAPs may be rechallenged, one group at a time, to determine which foods might cause irritation.

For more information about the FODMAP diet, check out my Resources page, where I have included links to websites of nutritionists who are great resources (and are way more qualified than I am to further educate you on this topic 😅).
